EXPERIENCE MAYAN CULTURE

Discover astonishingly well preserved ruins from your base at Excellence Playa Mujeres. Travel from modern day to the ancient Mayan world.

This great civilization extended through sections of Mexico to present-day Guatemala, Belize and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Many of the greatest treasures of the Mayan culture are located here on the Yucatan Peninsula.

A day trip from Excellence Playa Mujeres catapults you into another civilization and another millennium. This great New World civilization, which spanned more than 3,000 years, left behind a legacy of achievement in art, architecture, astronomy and mathematics that scholars are still trying to understand.

CHICHEN ITZA

Chichen Itza, a World Heritage site, was voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It is one of the most visited archeological sites in Mexico. Among the cluster of monuments is the stepped pyramid of El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulkan. If you’re lucky enough to be here during the spring or fall equinox, you’ll witness the appearance of a shadowy serpent descend the steps as the sun sets in late afternoon. The Chicken Itza complex also houses the Sacred Cenote, or sacred well.

COBA

Coba is an ancient Mayan city, east of Chichen Itza, located deep in the tropical jungle and rising up between two lagoons. The tallest pyramid in the Yucatan is here, Nohoc Mul, one of the few the public is allowed to climb. Negotiate up its 120 steps to the top and you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the jungle landscape.

TULUM

Tulum is an ancient fortress city with breathless views of the sea. Tulum’s collection of ruins includes El Castillo, a castle perched on the edge of a limestone cliff. The Temple of the Frescoes is another must-see of this seaport city. The temple houses original frescoes depicting Mayan gods and religious motifs. Bring your swimsuit for a post-exploration dip. Tulum sits along one of the prettiest beaches along the Mayan Riviera.
